Behavior

Class dojo is a wonderful classroom management system.  It allows students and parents the ability to observe

classroom behavior whenever they want.  The program works on a point system in which positive points and

negative points are awarded on a weekly basis.   Positive points are awarded for things such as demonstrating

the schools guiding principles, turning in homework, reading log and take home draft book, participating in class discussions, receiving a compliment from another teacher, and many more.  If by some chance a student is doing something unsafe, is disrespectful or not following directions, shouts out without raising their hand, or is off task, they will receive a negative point which takes away one point from their running tally.  Throughout the week there will be several check in's to see where each student is with their points.  At the end of the week, there will be a final check to see who has a total of 7 points (including positive minus the negative).  If the student has 7 points or more, they are able to participate in Friday fun club!  If seven points were not earned throughout the week, the student will write a letter home explaining why he/she was unable to participate.

In the beginning class dojo can be a bit confusing.  You will receive 2 login "secret codes", one for the student so they are able to login and change their avatar and look at their points, as well as a parent login.  The parent login is different in that comments made by the teacher can be seen. Creating an account as a parent, you will receive an emailed weekly report every Friday.

Snacks & Parties

Please pack a healthy snack everyday. Things such as fruit, fruit snacks, granola bars, crackers, string cheese, etc. are great options.  Please avoid sugar-filled snacks.  We have a drinking fountain in the classroom, so no drinks or juice boxes are necessary.  Also, please remember that it is just a snack to tide them over until the end of the day, thus one item will be sufficient.  No “meals” please.  We will be celebrating birthdays during snack time/afternoon recess from 1:00—1:15 (short and sweet).  If you would like to bring in a special treat in for the kids, please make sure it is store bought, and does not contain any form of nuts.  You are welcome to come celebrate with us, or simply drop off the items before school, just let me know.

Homework

Students are expected to read nightly for at least 15 minutes and log it on their reading log.  The weekly reading log should be turned in the following THURSDAY.  Take home draft books will be sent home after the first month of school in which your child should write as much as they are able.  I understand that some nights are crazier than others and some children enjoy writing while it is a struggle for others.  Therefore, I ask that your child turn in thier take home draft book every two weeks with a minimum of 3 stories.  If you feel that your child is able to do more, please encourage them to do so.   The last piece of homework that is required is ongoing practice of sight words.  Again, more information will be sent home explaining how this works as the year gets going.  Please keep in mind that your child must be able to automatically recognize the word and read it quickly without sounding it out.  For the first book, the green book (kindergarten words), I ask that your child be able to spell it correctly as well.  The sight word books that follow (red, blue & yellow), only need to be read, not spelled.
